My Favourite Waste of Time

If you’re in the habit of wasting time on Facebook, you may have recently come across the 30 Day Song Challenge. Basically, you pick a song for each day that relates to people, places or moments in your life. Mostly, these will be songs you like, but they could also be songs that you dislike or even hate. I’ve been meaning to give it a go it myself, but with this and that and one thing and the other I haven’t gotten around to it until now. Seeing as I have a blog and all, I’ve decided to post the songs here instead of on Facebook. So, without further ado, I present my first song in this challenge thing – My Favourite Song. I must admit that, like many of you I’m sure, I could be here until the cows come home trying to figure this out. Out of all the thousands of songs that I like, what is my favourite one? God only knows

Instead, I’ve decided to pick my favourite song that has the word “favourite” in its title. Now, I could have chosen My Favourite Game by The Cardigans, My Favourite Dress by The Wedding Present or even My Favourite Things from The Sound of Music. However, I’ve decided to go for My Favourite Waste of Time as my favourite favourite song. It’s a simple song with a nice melody and repeated use of the title in its chorus. The singer’s favourite waste of time is, in fact, the person to whom the song is addressed: his lady friend. Unfortunately, he neglects to mention what his second, third or even fourth favourite time-wasting activities are, though I would guess that writing songs, singing and playing guitar would all feature prominently in his list. I first heard the song in 1986 when it made it to number three on the UK charts for Scottish singer Owen Paul. It had actually been written in 1979 by US singer-songwriter Marshall Crenshaw and first saw the light of day as a b-side to his 1983 single Cynical Girl. However, my favourite version of the song is by another US singer-songwriter named Freedy Johnston, who used it as the title track of his 2008 covers album. You can check it out below if you have a spare moment or two. It’s only just over two minutes in length anyway, so you’ll have plenty of time to waste on Facebook afterwards

    • I was looking at Clapton for signs of guilty pleasure, but he seems pretty nonplussed. The song may also be about Jakob Dylan. You haven’t come across Sheryl playing with him, have you?
